Maisie

Maisie was a beautiful white boxer with an exceptional personality. Although we believe she was deaf, she was one of the most alert and intelligent dogs we have ever had the privilege to be around. She was also one of the most caring (and cuddly!) dogs we’ve ever seen. She relied on Kristy and I to take care of her almost as much as we relied on her love. This is her story. Kristy and I had been searching for a puppy to spoil for a couple months by the time we came across an ad for boxer puppies. We called the breeder, Milt Openshaw of Coronach, to ask some questions. Milt’s love for Maisie was very apparent even though he only had a few short weeks with her. He actually didn’t want to give her up, but we talked him into it. Eventually we ended up driving to Coronach “just to take a look”. Maisie ended up melting our hearts and we gave a down payment that day. Who says you can’t buy love? Maisie joined our household on September 7, 2007. We were so happy and excited to finally have a beautiful, loving puppy to take care of. Although we had originally thought that we would attempt to kennel train her, Maisie slept in our bed that first night. This set a precedent with her, as she slept in between Kristy and I on the bed from that day forward! Everything went well for our happy family until that fateful day, August 5, 2008. There isn’t really a nice way to put this, so I’m just going to say it. Maisie was electrocuted at about 3:45 p.m. out at a cabin at Saskatchewan Beach. Basically, there was a rock garden with a pond. There was a pump for a water fountain in the pond. Apparently, the pump was sending an electric current through the water, so when Maisie went to get a drink, she must’ve gotten shocked, and she fell in. That was itL There are several reasons why I decided to use the word “fateful” above. We believe that Maisie was put on this Earth to protect the life of an innocent child. It seems only natural that children would be drawn to the pond while they were playing. There are several facts that lead us to believe that this was Maisie’s purpose: -Kristy, who works shift work, had been asked several times if she wanted to work that day. Normally, Kristy says yes to these requests, but on this one specific time, Kristy held firm and decided she was going to the lake. -Maisie was absolutely terrified of water. On our walks she would often avoid the tiniest puddles. Sometimes we would have to drag her around the puddle just to keep walking! Did she know what fate had in store for her? -Kristy was supposed to meet her mother, Colleen, in Silton that afternoon. Colleen’s cell phone had died so she couldn’t call Kristy. Kristy searched all over Silton (a small town of approximately 20 people), but to no avail. -After giving up her search, Kristy decided to wait at a location in Silton, to see if her mother would drive by. Instead of her mother showing up, one of Kristy’s cousins stopped when she saw Kristy and invited her (and Maisie) back to their cabin for a drink. Kristy only planned to stay for one drink, but was talked into staying for two. This was when the unthinkable event happened. As you can see, several events led to Kristy and Maisie being at that place at that exact point in time. Although we are extremely saddened by the loss of Maisie, we can only imagine what kind of heartache a parent would go through if they lost their child. We are thankful that nobody has to go through that kind of pain as a result of that pond. To us, Maisie was so much more than a pet. She was our baby…our hero…our Angel. We will never forget you!

Maisie's Poem
Maisie by Levi Penno

Thud thud thud go her romping paws Moving as much as her slobbery maw Dark brown eyes, shinning with delight Shinning like sun, and twice as bright When she plays she causes a smile On any who pause to watch her for a while Her long slender legs, waving like fists As if threatening, you want some of this! She was not a small little pup When she played with her friends, they were always looking up But for how big she was, her heart was 3 times the size And you could even see the love, in Maisie’s dark brown eyes And there was in fact a reason for this love For the Lord Almighty, had chosen her from above He had lain down a path for her, that she was doomed to tred And now, poor sweet Maisie is buried and dead But even in her final moments, her love stayed a while She revealed a fatal hazard, that might’ve taken a human child So Maisie the angel ascended to the skies And saved some unknown mom and dad, from having tears in their eyes She protected a little girl, maybe running for her toy Or perhaps she protected an innocent little boy We will never know and for that we must give thanks Because no human parents, will cry on that ponds bank Even so we will never forget The love in her brown eyes, and you can bet That we will too remember her slobbery maw And the thud thud thud, of her loping, romping paws.
